Name of Kingdom :- Pandyan Kingdom
Era :- Medieval
Period :- 550 B.C. to 1350 A.D.
Dominance Area :- Southern India
Capital(s) :- Korkai, Madurai
Description :- The country of the Pandyas, Pandi Mandala, was described as Pandionis Mediterranea by Periplus and Modura Regia Pandionis by Ptolemy.

The Pandyas excelled in both trade and literature from before the Christian Era. They controlled the pearl fisheries along the South Indian coast, between Sri Lanka and India, which produced some of the finest pearls known in the known ancient world. Tradition holds that the legendary Sangams were held in Madurai under their patronage, and that some of the Pandya Kings were poets themselves.

The Pandyas were first mentioned by Megasthanese, who said that the Pandyan kingdom was famous for pearls.

The Pandyan territory included modern districts of Tirnelvelli, Ramanad and Madurai in Tamil Nadu. It had its capital at Madurai, situated on the banks of Vaigai River.

The Pandya king profited from trade with Roman Empire and sent emissaries to Roman emperor Augustus and Trojan.

The Pandyas find mention in the Ramayana and Mahabharata too.

The earliest known Pandyan rule was Mudukudumi, who ruled from Madurai. He accused Kavalan of theft. As a result, the city of Madurai was laid under a curse by Kannagi (Kavalan’s wife)
